Allie, a redheaded white woman, is wearing a plaid dress she sewed, holding her baby girl, Poppy. She stands next to her husband, a white man with brown hair who wears a blue shirt. Their daughter, Clementine, a blonde 4 year old, stands in front of them in a white dress. Their black rescue dog, Pepper, sits next to Clementine with her tongue out.

hey there!

I’m so glad you’re here! My name is Allie Heroux Mielke (pronounced her-oo milky). I live in St Paul, Minnesota with my husband, Erich, and our two young girls, Clementine & Poppy, and our rescue pup, Pepper.

I have a degree in Art History with a minor in Visual Arts and I’ve been doing freelance graphic design since 2015.  I’ve always had a deep love for the arts and I’ve been making things for as long as I can remember. From sewing clothes & Halloween costumes to portraiture & branding design, and now surface design, I find immense joy in creating. My curiosity, for better or worse, has no limit and I’m always chasing new hobbies and trying/failing at new things.

When I was pregnant with my second daughter, Poppy, during the summer of 2020 (hello, Covid), I found that sewing helped me manage my mental health and it brought me so much peace & clarity during an incredibly stressful time. As I kept on with my sewing hobby, I felt a little disappointed with the selection of fabrics available and wished I could design some of my own.

In January of 2022, I was feeling a little lost as to what my next career steps should be. My previous experience was working at an art museum and doing freelance graphic design, but those things just didn’t fill my heart with joy anymore. I spent a lot of time brainstorming and trying new things and I finally discovered Surface Design. It was like a whole world opened up to me that I’d never known about before! I could use my art to make the world more beautiful, create fabric that I could use in my sewing projects, and do it all while I spend my days at home with my babies.

So, that’s what has led me here! To this exciting space. I’m so glad you’ve joined me here! And I hope that what you see here will inspire you to infuse your corner of the world with a little more joy and color.
